We feel a lot of love and respect from them. We have lots of young staff who over the years we have seen through many of life’s ups and downs, so for them they see us almost as a surrogate Mum and Dad. How do you think other staff within the business view you as individuals and as a couple? How important is this image to you? We have been married for 40 years, we know how not to escalate an argument! How do you overcome operational disagreements? Judy: As Robin says sometimes his ‘winging it’ doesn’t work and I have to pick up the pieces, but he is very task driven and always encourages me.ĭo you have any golden rules for discussing business? Robin: We are good at encouraging each other to meet the deadlines by creating spaces in our own diaries to help each other, however Judy can be very pedantic when putting schemes together over the smallest detail whereas I get bored easily and am prepared to ‘wing it’ to get a decision made. How do you best work together? What are your strengths and weaknesses? We have more formal meetings with the team on a regular basis but really depends on what projects we have on the go. It can be first thing in the morning until last thing at night, but that’s probably not that healthy so we are trying hard to put a little balance into our work/life time right now. How often do you come together to share ideas and updates? Until a few months ago I was CEO and Chairman of both Lime Wood Group and The Pigs, but I have stepped back to the role of chairman now and our long-standing group operations director, Tom Ross has taken the reins as managing director. The ongoing interiors maintenance of the hotels is a big job in itself, quite apart from any new projects. Judy overseas everything interior-wise and now has a recently formed small team to help her. Judy is very much the guardian of ‘the look and feel’ of our Pig hotels, but we work on the design together and whilst she is often my sounding board for ideas she tends to stay away from the operational and business side.ĭay to day, what do your separate roles involve? So, I don’t think it was ever really a conscious decision to work together, it just morphed into that type of partnership. They gave me and Judy the confidence to undertake the subsequent projects by ourselves and over the past nearly 30 years we have created quite a number of hotels. Way back at the beginning of the very first Hotel du Vin, Winchester in 1994 we had friends, artist Chris Boulter and interior designer, Lisa Crew Reid help us with the interiors.
